What ILD and Rebound Tell You About Bra Cup Foam
Short answer: ILD tells you how much force it takes to push a foam bra cup in; rebound tells you how quickly and completely that foam pushes back. Two cups can share the same ILD and feel completely different on the body, because one recovers instantly while the other stays dented. Senfeng molded PU foam cups are built on a controlled combination of 25–30 kg/m³ density and ILD 28–35, with recovery behaviour checked before shipment.
Most buyers ask for “soft” or “firm” cups. Those words do not survive a factory handover. The numbers below do.
ILD and rebound measure two different things
ILD is a force measurement
ILD, or Indentation Load Deflection, is the force required to compress a foam sample to 25% of its original thickness. It is a static number. A higher ILD means the foam resists initial pressure more strongly, which is what a wearer reads as firmness in the first second of contact.
For PU foam bra cups, the workable band is ILD 28–35. Below 28 the cup collapses under bust weight and loses its molded profile through the day. Above 35 the cup starts to feel like a shell and can leave visible press marks on lightweight jersey and lace. Rebound is a recovery measurement
Rebound, sometimes called resilience, describes how much energy the foam returns after being compressed and how fast it recovers its original shape. The wider foam industry measures it with a ball-drop test: a steel ball is dropped onto the foam and the bounce height is expressed as a percentage of the drop height. High-resilience foams spring back quickly; low-resilience foams sink and recover slowly.
This is the property that separates conventional PU foam from viscoelastic memory foam, which is deliberately engineered for very low rebound so it holds a body impression. That behaviour suits mattresses. In a bra cup worn for twelve hours it is usually the opposite of what a brand wants, because the cup keeps the last shape it was pressed into. Senfeng does not produce memory foam cups; the material is mentioned here only as industry background so buyers can tell the two families apart.

Why two cups with the same ILD can feel different
Buyers regularly receive two samples marked ILD 32 that behave nothing alike. Three things usually explain it.
- Cell structure. Open, even cells compress smoothly and recover fast. Irregular or partly closed cells produce a dead, spongy feel at the same nominal ILD.
- Molding history. Hot pressing compresses material unevenly by design, so a cup pressed at the high end of the temperature and pressure window is denser at the crown than at the rim.
- Age and storage. Foam held compressed in a carton for months recovers more slowly than fresh stock. Judge softness on a rested sample.
Compression set is the number that decides longevity
A third property quietly decides whether a cup survives a season of wear and washing: compression set, the permanent thickness a foam loses after being held compressed for a defined period. A cup with acceptable ILD but poor compression set passes incoming inspection and then flattens out after twenty wears, which is the most common late-stage complaint in molded cups.
Density is the best early predictor here, and it is a large part of why our standard band sits at 25–30 kg/m³ rather than lower. Foam below that band can be tuned to hit an attractive ILD number on day one and still lose thickness quickly in service.
How softness is controlled in our production
Softness is not only a material property; it is also a process outcome. Senfeng runs traditional hot-press molding at our Dongguan factory in Guangdong at 160–200°C, 15–30 tons of pressure and an 8–15 second hold, depending on cup thickness and profile.
Over-pressing raises effective firmness beyond the confirmed sample and dulls recovery; under-pressing leaves the cup soft but shape-unstable. Every shift completes a production parameter log, so a batch can be traced back to its exact molding conditions if a customer reports a hand-feel deviation. Finished-goods yield holds steady above 95%.

Matching ILD and recovery to garment type
- Everyday, seamless, bralette: ILD 28–30, fast recovery. Soft on contact, must not stay creased after folding.
- T-shirt and lightly padded: ILD 30–32. Balanced firmness, clean profile under smooth fabric.
- Push-up, structured, sports: ILD 33–35, strong recovery. Repeated compression during movement makes rebound critical here.
- Maternity and nursing: lower ILD for comfort, but recovery still matters because these cups are folded constantly.
How to check recovery on a sample yourself
- Let the sample rest flat and unpacked for at least two hours.
- Press the crown flat with your palm, hold ten seconds, release. A resilient PU cup returns to close to full profile within a couple of seconds.
- Fold the cup rim to rim, hold thirty seconds, release, and check for a remaining crease line after a minute.
- Repeat on three cups from the same batch. Consistency between cups matters as much as any single result.
Frequently asked questions
Is higher ILD the same as better support?
No. Support comes from ILD, density and cup geometry together. A high-ILD cup made from low-density foam feels firm at first and then loses thickness. A correctly matched cup uses adequate density as the base and sets ILD to the garment requirement.
Does Senfeng publish a rebound percentage in the specification?
Our controlled specification values are density 25–30 kg/m³ and ILD 28–35. Recovery behaviour is confirmed against the approved sample rather than quoted as a standalone certified figure, so what you approve at sampling is the reference for bulk.
Can I request low-rebound memory foam cups?
Senfeng produces conventional resilient PU foam molded cups and sandwich mesh materials. We do not manufacture memory foam cups. If a project genuinely requires that material, tell us and we can help point you toward an appropriate source.
How far can bulk deviate from the approved sample?
Bulk ILD should stay within about plus or minus 5 of the confirmed sample. Anything beyond that is effectively a different product, even if both readings sit inside the general 28–35 band.
How quickly can I get samples at a specified ILD?
From our library of over 2000 existing molds, samples are usually ready in 1–2 days. A newly opened mold takes 3–7 days. Minimum order quantity is 500 pairs, and we have eight years of export experience with a zero bad-debt record and Sinosure coverage.
