Why 4-Grade Yellowing Resistance Matters in Bra Cups
A bra cup can pass every fit and support check and still be rejected at the retail door for one reason: it turned yellow. Yellowing is the quiet defect of this category. It does not appear on the production line or at final inspection, and often does not appear until the goods have crossed an ocean and sat in a warehouse for two months. By then the cup is sewn into a finished garment and the cost of the problem is no longer the cost of the foam.
This is why Senfeng specifies its PU foam molded cups at 4-grade yellowing resistance. Below is what the grade measures, what causes yellowing, and what a buyer can do to keep white and nude cups white.
What Yellowing Actually Is
Polyurethane foam yellows through chemical change, not through dirt. Three mechanisms account for almost everything seen in practice.
- Photo-oxidation (UV yellowing). Most flexible PU foam is made with aromatic isocyanates. Under ultraviolet light those aromatic rings oxidise into coloured compounds. This is the classic window-display yellowing: the side of the cup facing the light darkens while the hidden side stays white.
- Phenolic yellowing. Antioxidants used in foam and in packaging materials can react with nitrogen oxides in warm, humid air and produce a pink-to-yellow stain. This is the mechanism behind the container yellowing that appears after ocean freight, and it is often blamed on the foam when the real source was the poly bag, the carton, or the shipping conditions.
- Thermal and process yellowing. Foam that is over-heated during molding scorches internally. The cup may look acceptable on the surface and show a distinctly darker core when cut open.
The three look similar to the eye and have completely different fixes, which is why diagnosing the cause matters more than arguing about whose fault it is.
How the Grade Is Read
Yellowing resistance is reported on a grey scale from 1 to 5, where 5 means no perceptible colour change and 1 means severe change. The scale is comparative: a technician places the exposed sample beside an unexposed control and rates the difference against standard grey chips. Half grades such as 4-5 or 3-4 are normal.

Grade 4 is the practical export threshold. It is not the highest number available, but it is the level at which a white cup still reads as white after realistic transit and shelf exposure. Chasing grade 5 usually means paying for chemistry the garment does not need.
Two points to keep straight: the grade is only meaningful with a stated test method and exposure duration, so specify both in the purchase order, and if your protocol requires a formal certificate, the test belongs at an accredited third-party laboratory.
Where Yellowing Really Comes From
In eight years of exporting bra cups, the failures we have been asked to investigate cluster in four predictable places.
- Ocean transit in a hot container. Weeks at elevated temperature and humidity is the single most aggressive real-world exposure a cup will ever face.
- Packaging chemistry. Untreated kraft cartons and certain poly bags carry the antioxidants and nitrogen oxide sources that drive phenolic yellowing. The foam is the victim, not the cause.
- Retail lighting. Display samples under strong spot lighting for months are effectively running an accelerated UV test on the shop floor.
- Laundering and finishing. Optical brighteners and alkaline residues in the garment can shift the apparent colour of the cup underneath.
Only one of these four sits inside the cup factory. A supplier who blames the buyer for all four is not useful, and neither is a buyer who assumes the foam is always at fault.
How Senfeng Controls It
Our approach is deliberately unglamorous, because yellowing control is a process discipline rather than a technology story.
Material selection. We work in a controlled band: density 25-30 kg/m³, ILD 28-35, with yellowing resistance specified at grade 4. Foam that does not meet the incoming standard does not enter production. Process control. Hot-press molding runs at 160-200°C with 15-30 tonnes of pressure and an 8-15 second dwell. The upper end of that range is where thermal scorch begins, so every shift records its actual parameters in a production log. That log is the reason a yellowing complaint can be traced back to a specific batch and a specific setting instead of becoming a debate. Traceability and certification. Yield runs above 95% with per-batch records retained. We hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GRS and ISO 9001. To be precise: OEKO-TEX governs harmful substance limits and GRS governs recycled content, so neither is a yellowing test. What they provide is evidence that the material stream is documented and auditable, which is the condition under which a yellowing investigation can reach a conclusion at all.
What Buyers Can Do
- Write the grade, the test method and the exposure time into the PO. “Must not yellow” is not a specification.
- Keep a sealed retained sample from the approved lot. Without a control there is nothing to grade against.
- Specify packaging as carefully as foam. Use inner bags and cartons appropriate for long humid transit.
- Test the assembled garment, not only the loose cup. Interactions between shell fabric, adhesive and foam are common.
- Prioritise white, ivory and nude programmes. Dark colours mask the same chemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does grade 4 mean the cup will never yellow?
No. It means colour change stays slight and non-obvious under the specified test. Any aromatic PU foam will change eventually under sufficient UV and heat. Grade 4 defines an acceptable rate of change for normal export and retail conditions, not immunity.
My cups turned pink rather than yellow. Is that the same problem?
That is usually phenolic yellowing rather than UV yellowing, and the source is frequently packaging or storage conditions rather than the foam. Investigate the poly bag and carton before changing foam supplier, because new foam will not fix a packaging-driven reaction.
Would memory foam yellow less?
Not inherently. Viscoelastic memory foam is also polyurethane and is subject to the same aromatic photo-oxidation. Can I verify yellowing performance before placing a bulk order?
Yes, and you should. Samples come from our library of over 2000 existing molds in 1-2 days, or 3-7 days if a new mold is required, with a minimum order of 500 pairs. Send those samples to your own laboratory and approve against your own report.
Does higher density improve yellowing resistance?
No, they are independent properties. Density affects support, weight and durability; yellowing resistance depends on foam chemistry and additive package. A 30 kg/m³ cup can yellow faster than a 25 kg/m³ cup if the chemistry is worse, so specify both separately. Our note on ILD and rebound makes the same point about hardness.
