How Push Up Padded and Wireless Bra Cups Differ

Push-up, padded and wireless are the three cup families lingerie buyers ask for most often, and the three that get mis-specified most often on a purchase order. Those words describe how the finished bra looks and feels on a body. They do not, on their own, tell a moulded cup factory what to make.

The Real Difference Is Where the Foam Sits

All three cup types can start from the same PU foam sheet. Density stays in our standard 25-30 kg/m³ window and indentation load deflection (ILD) stays in the 28-35 band. What changes between a push-up, a padded and a wireless cup is not usually the material. It is the thickness map: how foam mass is distributed across the cup surface after hot pressing.

Think of a moulded cup as a three-dimensional wedge rather than a flat pad. A mould can make one region several millimetres thicker than another, and that redistribution is what creates lift, coverage or edge stability. Buyers who describe cups this way instead of by marketing name need far fewer sampling rounds.

These ILD figures are indicative starting points from our own development history, not fixed grades. Final values are always locked on a signed sealed sample, one copy held by the brand and one by the factory.

Push-Up Cups Load the Foam Low and Outward

A push-up cup does its work through asymmetry. The thickest section sits low in the cup and towards the side seam, which pushes breast tissue up and inward towards the centre front. The top edge is deliberately thin, often feathered down to a couple of millimetres, so no ridge shows through a light garment.

Two consequences follow. A push-up cup is directional, so left and right are mirror parts that are never interchangeable, and mixing them in a carton is a common packing complaint. And a thicker low section needs slightly firmer foam, or the lift collapses after a few wears, which is why push-up development usually lands in the upper half of our ILD band. Padded Cups Trade Lift for Predictability

A padded cup, sometimes called a moulded T-shirt cup, is the workhorse of the category. Thickness is broadly even across the cup face, typically in the range a brand nominates for the whole size run. It is not there to reshape the bust. It is there to give a smooth, opaque, repeatable silhouette under knitwear.

Simpler geometry makes padded cups the easiest type to scale across a wide size range, but also the least forgiving cosmetically. An even surface means any density variation reads as a visible dent or shadow, so incoming foam is checked against specification before pressing, and a batch outside the agreed density and hardness window is rejected rather than pressed. Every shift records its pressing parameters in a production log for traceability, which is a large part of how we hold a 95 percent plus first-pass yield.

Wireless Cups Move the Work to the Edge

Wireless is the fastest-growing of the three and the most misunderstood. Removing the underwire does not mean the cup has to become the support element. In any bra, the band and the straps carry most of the load. What the wireless cup must do is hold its own arc so the underline stays defined instead of folding flat.

We achieve that by thickening the perimeter, especially along the underline curve, and by pressing a deeper set into the shape so the cup remembers its geometry. Wing width and cradle construction on the garment side matter just as much. A brand that asks for a wireless cup while keeping a narrow band will usually be disappointed regardless of what the cup does.

What Each Type Demands From the Mould

Cup type drives tooling cost far more than material cost. An even-thickness padded cup is the simplest tool; a push-up needs a mould that reproduces a steep gradient without thin spots; a wireless cup needs a rim that presses cleanly every cycle.

  • Existing mould: if one of our 2,000 plus moulds matches your profile, samples ship in one to two days.
  • New mould: a bespoke profile takes three to seven days to first sample, which is roughly half the timeline many buyers are quoted elsewhere.
  • Minimum order: 500 pairs, which keeps first production runs realistic for smaller labels and capsule collections.

Three Spec Mistakes We See Every Month

  • Naming a type but no thickness. “Push-up” without a maximum thickness at the low point can vary by several millimetres between factories. Give a number, or give us a physical reference cup.
  • Assuming wireless means softer. It usually means the opposite at the rim. Soft foam everywhere gives a cup that folds in the wash.
  • Changing type mid-size-run. A profile that flatters a B cup may need re-grading, not just scaling, at DD and above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the same foam be used for all three cup types?

Often yes. Our standard PU foam at 25-30 kg/m³ density and 28-35 ILD covers all three families. The difference is created by the mould geometry, not by switching material. Where a brand wants a noticeably firmer push-up or wireless rim, we move within that band rather than outside it.

Does Senfeng make memory foam cups?

No. We specialise in moulded PU foam. Memory foam, or viscoelastic foam, is a different material family that softens with body heat and recovers slowly. It has genuine comfort advantages and some brands do use it, but it is not what we produce. If you need it, tell us and we will point you to a peer factory rather than take an order we cannot serve properly.

Which type is easiest to start with for a new brand?

A padded moulded cup from an existing mould. It uses tooling we already hold, samples in one to two days, and gives you a clean baseline silhouette to iterate from before you invest in a bespoke push-up or wireless profile.

Can you match a competitor sample?

Usually. Send a physical cup, and we measure its thickness profile at key points against our existing mould library first. If nothing matches closely enough, we quote a new mould on the three to seven day timeline.
