Bra Cup Profile from Shallow to Demi to Full
What Bra Cup Profile Actually Means
When buyers talk about a “shallow cup” or a “full cup,” they are describing the cup profile – the cross-section geometry of the molded foam. Three things define a profile: how much of the breast it covers (coverage height), where the upper rim sits relative to the apex (upper-edge position), and the angle of the cup wall. These are set by the mold cavity, not by the foam recipe. At Senfeng the same PU foam – density 25-30 kg/m3, ILD 28-35 – can be molded into a shallow, demi, or full profile simply by choosing a different one of our 2,000+ existing molds.
Profile is different from cup type. A push-up, a padded cup, and a wireless cup (covered in our push-up, padded and wireless comparison) describe how foam is distributed. Profile describes how much skin the cup covers and where its top edge lands. You can have a full-profile push-up or a shallow-profile wireless cup.
Three Profiles Buyers Actually Specify
Most bra programs draw from three profile families. None is “better” – each matches a different garment and neckline.
Shallow profile
A shallow cup covers the lower breast and stops well below the apex. Its upper edge sits low, leaving the upper breast uncovered. This profile is the natural choice for plunge and deep V-necklines where a higher cup would show above the fabric. Because the wall is short, the cup reads as minimal and open.
Demi profile
A demi (or half) cup covers about half to three-quarters of the breast, with the upper edge landing near the nipple line. It is the most versatile profile: it works under scoop, sweetheart, and balconette necklines, and it balances coverage with a low, flattering line. Many everyday and fashion bras use a demi profile.
Full profile
A full cup rises above the apex and extends toward the underarm, covering the whole breast. It pairs with high necklines, crew necks, and racerback or high-impact styles where maximum containment matters. Full profiles are common in sports, maternity, and full-bust programs.
| Profile | Coverage | Upper-edge position | Best neckline | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shallow | Low (below apex) | Sits well below nipple line | Plunge, deep V | Push-up, low-cut fashion |
| Demi | Mid (to nipple line) | Around the nipple line | Sweetheart, scoop, balconette | Everyday, fashion |
| Full | High (above apex) | Above nipple line, toward underarm | Crew, high neck, racerback | Sports, maternity, full-bust |
Why Profile Is a Mold Geometry, Not a Spec Sheet
The profile lives in the mold, not in a material certificate. Two cups made from identical foam can have completely different profiles if they come from different mold cavities. That is why Senfeng maintains 2,000+ existing molds: the library already spans shallow, demi, and full profiles across many sizes, so a new program often starts from a profile that already exists rather than from a blank slate.
When a profile does need tuning – say a brand wants a demi that sits a few millimeters lower to clear a specific neckline – a new mold is opened. From an existing mold, sampling takes 1-2 days; a new mold takes 3-7 days. Either way the profile is locked by the steel, then verified against a sealed confirmation sample that both sides keep.
Matching Profile to Neckline and Pattern
The fastest way to pick a profile is to start from the garment’s neckline, because the cup’s upper edge must disappear under the fabric:
- Plunge / deep V – shallow profile, so the cup edge stays hidden below the cleavage line.
- Sweetheart / scoop – demi profile, which meets the neckline seam without gaping.
- Balconette – demi or a wide, low demi that lifts and exposes the upper breast.
- Crew / high neck / racerback – full profile for full containment under opaque fabric.
This is where profile planning connects to fit. As we explain in choosing cups by body type and support need, the cup does not carry load – the band and straps do. The profile’s job is containment: holding the breast shape within the garment’s intended line, not adding lift on its own.
How Profile Affects Comfort and Finish
Beyond coverage, profile changes how a finished bra feels and looks:
- Smoothness under clothing: a profile whose upper edge follows the neckline seam shows no ridge through thin fabric.
- Edge finish: shallow and demi cups expose more of the upper breast, so the cup rim and any binding must be clean; full cups hide the rim under fabric.
- Breathability: all profiles keep Senfeng’s standard 1.5-2 mm vent holes, 6-12 per cup, at no extra charge.
Sampling a Profile From the Mold Library
If your target profile already exists in the 2,000+ mold library, you can review a physical sample in 1-2 days and confirm the exact coverage height and upper-edge position against your pattern. The MOQ is 500 pairs. For a profile that needs a new mold, plan 3-7 days for sampling and lock capacity about 60 days before peak season. Every batch is logged on a per-shift production parameter record and holds a 95%+ yield, so the profile you approve is the profile you receive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a shallow cup still give support?
Support (load carrying) comes from the band and straps, not the cup. A shallow profile gives less coverage and containment, but it can still hold its own arc shape. Choose shallow when the neckline demands it, and rely on the band for lift.
Is profile the same as cup size?
No. Profile is the cross-section shape (shallow/demi/full); cup size is the volume it holds. The same profile exists across many sizes, and letter sizes are not universal across US/UK/EU/JP markets – specify the mold number and a sealed confirmation sample rather than a letter alone.
Can Senfeng make a custom profile?
Yes. If an existing mold does not match your neckline, a new mold is opened in 3-7 days. Senfeng specializes in molded PU foam cups and does not make memory foam, but we can refer memory-foam specialists when a program needs that material.
How is profile verified before production?
The profile is locked by the mold cavity and confirmed against a sealed sample both sides retain. Incoming foam is checked for density and ILD against the agreed spec; any batch outside the window is not released to production.
