What does GRS actually certify

GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certifies recycled content and its chain of custody. It does not test foam softness, hardness, color, or shape. A GRS certificate tells you a defined percentage of the material comes from recycled sources and that the supply chain from input to finished cup is tracked by an accredited body. Does a GRS certificate mean this batch contains recycled foam

Not automatically. This is the point buyers miss most. A factory scope certificate proves the site is approved to make GRS goods. The proof that your batch contains recycled material is the Transaction Certificate (TC), issued per shipment against that scope. Without a TC matched to your purchase, you cannot make a public recycled claim on that order. So when you plan a recycled program, ask for the TC, not just the scope certificate.

What recycled-content percentage can I claim

GRS 4.0 sets the commonly cited thresholds: 20% recycled content lets a product carry the GRS label as “GRS certified,” and 50% lets the GRS logo appear on the product. Standards change, so confirm the current version with your certifier. The key detail for buyers: the percentage must be written into the purchase order and verified by the TC. A cup that tested at one ratio cannot be assumed to hold the same ratio next season, because recycled feedstock varies between lots.

Do recycled cups perform the same as standard cups

In our process, the cup still meets density 25-30 kg/m3 and ILD 28-35, and carries 4-grade yellowing resistance. But recycled feedstock has more batch-to-batch variation than virgin foam, so the approved sample you signed cannot be carried forward blindly. Each recycled run needs its own signed confirmation sample covering density, ILD, tone, yellowing, and the thermoforming parameters (160-200°C, 15-30 tons, 8-15 seconds dwell). Treat the recycled spec as a re-confirmation step, not a copy-paste of the standard spec.

Can I sample a GRS cup before bulk

Yes, and you should request it up front. GRS eligibility depends on the foam lot, so a sample built on standard foam cannot approve a recycled bulk order. Tell us before we build the sample. Sampling still runs on our normal clock: 1-2 days from an existing mold, 3-7 days for a new mold, at a 500-pair MOQ. Lock capacity 60 days ahead in peak season.

How do the certifications fit together for export

GRS answers “can I make a recycled claim.” OEKO-TEX Standard 100 answers “is it safe against skin” (harmful substance limits). ISO 9001 answers “will it be the same cup next time” (quality system).
