What foam density actually measures

Density is the mass of the foam per unit volume, expressed in kilograms per cubic metre. It is a property of the foam sheet itself, set before the cup is ever molded. In a bra cup it drives two things: how well the cup holds its shape, and how heavy it feels. Below about 25 kg/m³ the foam tends to collapse and loses support; above 30 kg/m³ it gets stiff and adds unnecessary weight. Within that, 28-30 suits light everyday and seamless styles, 30-32 is a balanced all-round choice, and 33-35 gives the firm hold needed for structured, padded, or sports bras. A common mistake is to assume a denser cup is automatically firmer. It is not. Density and ILD are controlled separately during foam production, so you can have a low-density cup with a high ILD (springy but light) or a higher-density cup with a lower ILD (substantial but soft). That is exactly why both numbers must be written on the purchase order. Specifying only one leaves the other open, and an open spec is where batch-to-batch drift begins.

Is higher density always better for bra cups?

No. Above roughly 30 kg/m³ the cup becomes stiff and heavier without giving most bras extra benefit. The 25-30 kg/m³ band balances support, weight, and molding consistency, which is why it is Senfeng’s standard.

Which ILD should I choose for a sports bra cup?
