PU EVA or Sponge Bra Cups: Questions Buyers Ask
Bra cup buyers often ask the same handful of questions about materials: which foam is which, why PU foam dominates molded cups, and whether EVA or ordinary sponge can do the job. This Q&A collects the questions Senfeng’s team hears most from lingerie and sportswear brands, with plain answers grounded in how molded cups are actually made.
What materials are actually used in bra cups?
Four materials show up most often in bra cup production:
- PU foam (polyurethane) – the standard for molded cups. Senfeng specializes in PU foam molded cups, shaped by heat and pressure rather than cut and sewn.
- EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) – a firmer, more plastic-like foam, common in structured or waterproof inserts.
- Ordinary sponge – low-cost open-cell foam, usually laminated rather than molded into shape.
- Memory foam – viscoelastic foam that slowly returns to shape. It is an industry material some suppliers offer, but it is not part of Senfeng’s product range.
Why do most brands choose PU foam molded cups?
PU foam molded cups balance comfort, consistency, and cost better than the alternatives for everyday lingerie and activewear. At Senfeng the specification is fixed and verified:
- Density 25–30 kg/m³ – enough structure without bulk.
- ILD 28–35 – a measured softness range suited to body-contact wear. The ILD 28–35 range and how it relates to foam feel is covered in our density and ILD Q&A.
- 4-grade yellowing resistance – important for garments exported to markets with strong sunlight exposure.
- Breathability through 1.5–2 mm airflow holes, 6–12 per cup, included by default at no extra charge.
Because cups are heat-pressed in a mold, each pair is identical to the last. Senfeng logs production parameters every shift and holds a 95%+ yield, so buyers get repeatable cups batch after batch.
How does PU foam compare with EVA?
Both are foams, but they behave differently. The table below summarizes the practical differences for buyers.
| Property | PU foam (Senfeng) | EVA | Ordinary sponge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, springy | Firmer, denser | Soft but flat |
| Molding | Heat-pressed to shape | Cut or pressed | Laminated, not molded |
| Breathability | High (airflow holes) | Low | Medium |
| Best for | Daily & activewear | Structured inserts | Budget lining |
Is ordinary sponge a good choice?
Ordinary sponge is cheap and easy to cut, which is why it appears in very low-cost inserts. The trade-off is consistency: it is laminated rather than molded, so shape and thickness vary more between batches, and it compresses faster with wear. For brands that need stable sizing and a smooth cup surface, molded PU foam is the safer choice.
What about memory foam?
Memory foam is worth knowing as an industry option. Its slow-rebound feel suits some comfort-led designs, and it is sometimes marketed for premium lines. Senfeng focuses on PU foam molded cups and does not produce memory foam cups; we mention it here only so buyers can compare materials accurately, not as a Senfeng product.
How do I choose the right material for my garment?
Start from the garment’s job. Daily bras and light activewear favor molded PU foam for comfort and shape. Structured or swimwear inserts may call for EVA. Budget linings can use sponge. If you are matching a cup to a specific garment type, our bra cup product range and the cup type guide walk through the decision. Frequently asked questions
Is PU foam safe for skin-contact garments?
Yes. Senfeng’s PU foam cups are made in a factory certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GRS, and ISO 9001, which covers material safety for clothing that touches skin.
Can Senfeng match a specific density or ILD?
Senfeng works within a density of 25–30 kg/m³ and ILD 28–35 as the standard molded-cup range. With 2000+ existing molds and new-mold sampling in 3–7 days, most buyer specs are met from the current library or a quick custom mold.
Do airflow holes cost extra?
No. Ventilation holes of 1.5–2 mm, 6–12 per cup, are included by default on Senfeng PU foam cups at no added charge.
What is the minimum order quantity?
The MOQ is 500 pairs. Samples from an existing mold are ready in 1–2 days; new molds take 3–7 days.
